View Full Version : A sin to repaint?

I just acquired a Rogers Classmate bass drum on eBay, just like the bottom one here:
http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/rogers_sets/luxor_clipper_classmate/1960_luxor_clipper_clasmate.jpg
I only have the bass drum. The duco finish has some bad scratches. I'm considering getting it repainted, but in a color that matches a custom kit that I have. Would that be a crime for a vintage drum like this?
Thanks!

Given it's a Classmate and the finish is in poor condition AND you have no other matching drums...no, it's no sin. Go ahead.
-If it were a Holiday or Powertone or Spotlight or Mercury or Tower or such with original lugs, then the question becomes harder to answer.
-Now...MY question would be...aren't those the thru-lugs with the long t-rods which tighten via the opposite threaded claws ? If so..are you gonna leave those lugs/that system...of change it out ?

Thanks for your quick reply, ninefingers!
Good question about the thru-lugs, etc. I started thinking about that before I even had the drum in hand, but right now I'm actually digging the one-side only tuning, while I experiment with tunings.
If I do swap out the thru-lugs, I wont drill any new holes right away; I'll get double lugs (like these (http://www.bestdrumdeals.com/catalog/i650.html)), and even if they want two holes, I'll use just one at first. Of course I'd need a new set of tension rods.
Given that the drum was $165 with shipping, I don't want to put much money into it; I could've hunted down a nice Holiday instead.
ANOTHER QUESTION: what about a batter head? It has the original Rogers heads, which are beat-looking but usable. I'm getting a new Ambassador Bass for the reso, just for looks. Any suggestions for the batter? I like the vintage sound and I play folk-rock and Americana. Right now I'm using a small pillow just touching both heads. But I really like a good open sound like John Convertino of Calexico gets with his 20" Ludwig with no muffling.
Thanks!
Journeyman...check out EgoCentric single point lugs. I usually use those as replacement lugs when I renovate an old sorta thru-lug kit like the Classmate. No need to redrill or drill add'l holes...and you end up w/ independently tunable heads. Just a thought. Although, I agree with you that, for a bass drum, the existing equal tuning setup isn't bad really.....
Remo Fiberskyn bass drum head with a falam patch sounds like the prescription I would go with for the bass drum batter.....if t seems to "lively", stretch some felt across it.

Jaye, thanks for the tip on the Ego lugs. I ran across them earlier then couldn't find them. So now I'm thinking of these (http://www.egodrumsupply.com/roundedde.html) if I decide to go that way.
Sounds like good advice on the Fiberskyn too! I'll buy one.
Those are a good choice of lug...at most you may need to widen the existing holes a tad, but that's all.

In this situation, I totally agree that a repaint is perfectly fine -
OK - OK - Since no one else has stooped so low here, I'LL say it...
REPAINT AND SIN NO MORE!

You could also go for the powerstroke fiberskyn.....and save the hassle of the felt....

Thanks, Ludwig-dude. I considered the powerstroke but opted for the regular fiberskyn, since I already have the felt and I want to see how boomy I can get before the band complains :-)

Yes, but usually have to order them online or special order them locally. Not a high demand item.....

So, I got the Fiberskyn and tried it with an Ambassador coated reso. When I tried it, I saw the value of having a heavier head on the batter with the thru-lug design: because the tension is same front/back, the thicker batter head has a lower pitch, which is what I like. Inspired by that I put an Aquarian SK1 on the batter, and with a felt strip on the Ambassador reso, it's aMAZing. Great thump with just enough quickly decaying boom.
I'll find a good use for the Fiberskyn on another kick too. Experimenting is half the fun, of course. Thanks again.
SK1's are always nice. Sorry the F'skin didn't work out for you...they are livelier tha SK's....

I, for one, would like to applaud you for trying to keep the double-tension heads on that bass. Hope it works out.

Technically the fiberskyn would be thicker than the superkick I, as it has that extra layer on the surface that the Superkick does not. Superkick IIs would be a good choice too....I swear by them!
