View Full Version : Ludwig Drum Set Eagle Kit

Hi there from Leeds, England,
I'm looking for some information regarding my drums...
I have a Ludwig kit with 'eagles' inlaid into the outer ply of the shell. The shells have a wood stain finish and the eagles are a darker coloured wood/stain. There's one on each of the toms, and the bass drum front head has an image of a similiar bird with a beak full of sticks!
I've never seen another kit like it, but heard of someone who has one. And somewhere along the way i caught a whisper that it is some sort of Ludwig anniversary set.
Any information about this kit would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Neil.

If memory serves me right, it is a 75th anniversary kit.
http://www.garyatrics.se/images/anniversary_kit.jpg
Only available as a 5 piece.
I have a catalogue somewhere with the kit featured. I'll try to dig it out and forward a scan.
I saw one in Howarth's music at home in Wigan. It could, possibly, be the same kit as Dave Howarth told me only 5 came into the UK in 1984.

MAN THAT IS BAD-ASS!!!!!!!!!!
Perhaps my new favorite... besides the red/green/blue oyster style streak
Keystone badges I see. 50's-70's probably. I'm not quite sure. ROCK ON.
Cheers,coop.

Gaz,
That's the one! Or close to it. My kit has shallower depth mounted toms than the one in the photo.
I'd love to see the catalogue. I picked up mine from a friend 7 or 8 years ago. Think he got it from a shop down south a few years prior to that.
Interesting that only 5 came into the UK. Does the 75th anniversary date all the eagle kits to 1984?
Many thanks for the info.
Neil.

Yes, all the 75th anniversary kits date back to 1984. It was also the year that Ludwig reissued the gold keystone badges with the script logo (only larger than the original 60's keystone badges).
You should hang on to that kit. It's a "bute"!

Hi There! From Spain, I'm the moderator of the Vintage part of the world largest spanish speaking drum forum (www.batacas.com).
We have also that set in our site (http://www.batacas.com/foros/showthread.php?t=37266), and we have more doubts about it:
Was Chicago or Monroe make? Is it made Maple shells 9 ply?
The guy wants to sell it and has no idea of how much he can get, any idea?
Thanks Much from your brother forum, batacas.com!

Uncle John Turner offered me his a couple of years ago with snare for $600.00. I wish'd I bought them then, but at the time money was tight. When we talked just months before his passing I asked if he still had them and he said, "no they're long gone". His were used as the house kit at Antones' in Austin for a long time. I remember John saying there wasn't a famous blues drummer alive who hadn't played that kit. Man or man I blew it by not purchasing them. Somebody out there has them, perhaps someone in Austin. Here's Pictures of the kit...

Does anyone know how many were here in the US? I've never seen one, but that's one kit I'd love to own!! How did they do that design? Is it just a darker stain used or a different type of wood? That is really cool. :)

Those kits should have been made in Chicago. The first keystones had Chicago on them. Does your set have that on the badges?

These were made in 1984 ONLY in Chicago with the first of the large keystone badges. And yes, they are the 75th anniversary kits. Natural maple with the eagles was the only finish and they were only available in "power" sizes.

This is 4 year old post coming back and the other "Ludwig Dude" has not posted in two years.
So it is safe to say he will not be around.
In all fairness to Ludwig_Dude I will change that user name

Now, you know we love you LuddyDude, but goodness knows...there only needs to be ONE of you. Alternatives are just too frightening to consider. :p

In regards to the Eagle Kits, BII and BIII disliked the drums and the Eagle idea.....
Turns out that they were being sent back to Ludwig from dealers because the eagles were coming out.
In good Ludwig fasion they covered the ones that never sold with a wrap...
So there is a good chance people out there have these eagle sets with a finish on them.

Obviously a Selmer idea.....I never cared for the myself. Never knew about the wrap over the eagle sets......must have been like the black panther over the mod orange/citrus mod/psychadelic red kits we've all heard about....

Hi Actually i have a UK magazine review of this kit in Regular non-power sizes, and a picture.
My only problem with gigging the power size kit is the toms weigh a ton and kept 'slipping' back to rest upon one another..cheers !

I have an opportunity to buy a kit like this one for 600$ with all hardware. Is this a good deal ? I know close to nothing about vintage drums and Ludwig and this would be my first 'close to a vintage' buy. I'm looking for a touring kit and I also would like to know if they were a top of the line kit when they were first commercialised.
Any insight is appreciated,
Sébastien

Considering the rarity, I'd say $600 is a good deal, if the drums are in decent shape.

Someone was selling a set like this on ScamBay like a year ago. It sold for $750.00 w/o snare. Ludwig-dude (the real one) do you know if they were issued on different sizes or just the standard configuration?

They were offered as a five piece ONLY (no other configs were offered) in standard or power sizes and included a supraphonic for the snare.

Thanks for the info. Actually, there is a snare (looks like a supraphonic) and some cymbals with it. I'm going to have a look at them tomorrow. But I'm pretty sure I will be returning home with the drums !!

It's good to see this thread is still getting posts 5 years after my initial question. Great! I'm currently on tour with my trusty Ludwig eagle kit playing drums for Yann Tiersen in Europe.
I saw a documentary on TV about Buddy Holly a while back (looked like it was made in the 80's) and his drummer was interviewed sitting at, and then playing, one of the eagle kits.
I'd recommend these kits to anyone who's into an old school sound. Mine has the regular shallower toms and they sound amazing with coated Emperors on the batter side and clear ambassadors on the resonant side.
Best regards,
Neil

Just to bump this thread, I know Neil mentioned the Buddy Holly documentary. Here's Jerry Allison playing the Ludwig eagle kit at 4:25.
