This Star stencil 22/12/14 kit in oyster pearl sounds great and looks fantastic (snare is a '49 WFL Contest Snare)! It is my first restoration project and won't be my last. I found the kit which included a Star bass & Majestic toms, rusty dirty and missing pieces on ebay. Replaced most missing or broken parts with appropriate pieces, provided by mikey777. Thanks! I did use some 80's Tama Imperialstar 12" hoops for my rt because they were shiny, fit perfectly and didn't cost anything and purchased Gibraltar 9.5mm long ft legs. I tracked my project and got great help in this thread: Where to start restoring my first vintage, Star/Majestic kit? (http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=25981)

Incredible job! That kit came out fantastic and looks like million bucks. Love the color. I'm sure it is a pretty satisfying feeling to bring it back to life. Congratulations! Oh, by the way...how's she sound?

Kit looks sweet. Great job. Hope it sounds as good, and is as much fun to play as it looks. D' Drummer

Nice job! What is the wrap called? Is that gray silk/ripple? Whatever it's called, I like it!

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I love playing it!!

To SlingerLynn,
the 1966 Star catalog called the wrap Oyster Pearl. If I had to give it a color, I'd probably call it turquoise oyster pearl. The bass wrap is so faded, you can clearly see the wood grain through the lighter sections of the wrap.

To gwm & DaddyNowhere,
The tom's sound amazing, but I'm still finding the best tuning for the bass. Probably will change out the bass batter for a SK1 or Pinstripe for more of a thud over boom. I've discovered that the boomier the tone, the more i hear the lug springs buzzing. Here's a link to a video of my last gig. First time out with a new song, the video is really dark and the mix isn't great, but you definitely hear the drums. What impresses me with the sound is how big it is for the size of the kit! yes! got it! thanks for a super smooth transaction, bill. the hoop is much shinier than the snare at this point. I just got a buffer attachment for my drill and some semichrome polish from the harley shop. I'll go at my 80's slingy cos snare this weekend. Any thoughts on using a buffer for pitting removal? Can't wait!!

Great looking kit.

You can overcome this only by demounting the lugs and putting a piece of felt around the springs.
That's one of the very first things I ALWAYS do just after cleaning the shells.

Thanks for the tip, Ralph. I did do that for the FT and it took care of most of the buzzing. I used standard, fairly thin, craft felt. As I began disassembling my Slingerland snare I discovered very thick felt around the springs. I'd need 4-5 piece stack to achieve that thickness with the felt I've got. At some point I may go at my Star kit with the extra layers of felt, but at this point I don't have the time.

Thanks again,
Brian
