Just finished the resto work on this lovely WFL CLassic snare. 3-ply Mahogany-Poplar-Mahogany, Classic strainer, COB hoops, WMP. Jump For Joy sounds warm and fat like an early Jazz Fest should. Date stamped Oct. 1957

Kellyj!...

Nice job... and a beautiful specimen!! I have a near mint 1955 WFL Buddy Rich Super Classic in the BR snare drum collection. I'll attach a couple for you to view. The main thing with the Buddy model is that it should have the P88 butt in addition to the P87 Classic strainer, which your drum does of course have. I'll attach a pic of the P88 butt for you to see too. The squiggly lines on the P88 butt is an anomaly and not really in the chrome. Enjoy!!

Mr Mania!...

Then you have the P32 butt on your drum, and an awful lot of them were built with the P87 Classic strainer, and the P32 butt. It's just a "technicality" truth be told.. because ..

Ludwig cataloged the drum as the Buddy Rich Model Super Classic, but to be the actual model that Buddy played, the drum has to have fully extended wires with the P87 Classic strainer and the P88 extended butt. So!... is the drum STILL a Buddy Rich Model Super Classic if it has the P32 butt? Well yes... and no. It just means that everything else on the drum is identical to Buddy's, but his personal model utilized the fully extended wires and the P88 butt. I'll attach a pic of the P88.

Tommy,
Thanks for the clarification. Could you also post a pic of the extended wires or just a shot of the underside of the drum?

Many thanks!

Thanks Tommy and Vintagemore!

Those look like Puresound replica snares?
I was wondering too if you gave the Mahogany any kind of oil treatment or whitened somehow the WMP wrap? Help2

Thanks again!

No they are puresound snare wires. they are the vintage 3 hole model intended for this snare drum. and no the interior is original. the link to them. http://store.daddario.com/category/144377/W.F._Ludwig_Snare_w3_Screw_Mounting

Hey vintagemore2000!...

... is your name Tommyp?! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just funnin' with you my friend! Thanks for getting the pic up before I could. ( just saw the post now truth be told! )

kellyj!... Regarding the PureSound wires for this snare drum:

I have the OEM wires with my snare.. but .. I took them off and put on a set of the PureSounds. The OEM wires are actually "okay", but at 56 years old currently, well, they have seen their share of "stretching". LOL! The PureSounds that are offered for THIS set-up.. ( P87 and P88 ) .. do sound EXCELLENT on this drum. I do play this drum when I bring out my 1948/1950 WFL Buddy Rich Super Classic set, and those wires have never disappointed. I don't gig that set often actually, but HAD TO a couple times just to do it!! So Kelly... what butt do you have on your snare? P88 or P32? Here's a pic of the full set.. ( Buddy Rich Super Classic ) from the right side. It was LOW stage light, but you get the idea!

TommypHey Tommy. oops! jumped the gun!! I also have my original snare wires and like yours they just don't sound all that great at least compared to the puresound wires. I absolutely love this WFL snare drum it's one of my favorites now.

Vintagemore,
Thanks for the pic. Can we see the rest of your drum top-side?

Tommy P,
Wow! Is that nice...You're the WMP man. Well, so was Buddy for that matter.

Question. Would the P88 fit in place of my P33 so I could install the long snare set from Puresound. In other words no extra holes involved with a conversion. I notice on my Leedy & Ludwig snare from 1952 there is a P88.

Cheers!

Kelly!...

Actually it's the P32, not a P33... and no biggie there of course, I just thought you might want to know the actual number of that particular butt! Anyway...

I suspect that the mounting holes on the P32 and P88 will be the same... and there are only two of course. The "issue" is going to be at "what height is your P32 mounted at on the shell" ? Seeing as the P32 is just a stamped/pinch butt... the existing holes may be too low for the P88 to function as that butt has to be HIGHER up the shell to properly position the wires for attachment/function. That's going to be the "issue" I think. Have a look though!!

Vintagemore,
Beautiful drum! Love the Mahogany...i can clearly see the P88 Thanks.

Tommy, I will keep the drum as it was intentionally made, "A WFL 1957 Super Classic",

Why mess with manufacturing history and design. Integrity in this hobby is very important. I checked both of my early snares, a 1948 Leedy and a 1951 Leedy & Ludwig. Both have the Ludwig "Standard" type butt with a roller wheel mechanism. Similar in design to the P88, excepting the P88 has two tapped holes in a hexagonal "roller", I believe to receive the screws for the snare?

Thanks as always for the help! The Band
