Here it is, the 'Mac-Daddy' of all snare drums... a pre-serial COB 5" x 14" Supraphonic. More rightly called; Super Ludwig. It's in 9/10 condition. I'm not going to review the sound of this thing because it's been done to death. Suffice it to say, it is one of the best sounding snare drums ever made.
Enjoy,
John

Purdie, Is that the Supra that came with your new (old) kit you picked up?
What a beauty!

Some day I will score one, probably not COB but ya never know. I was the first to call on a CL add last summer in Chicago that might have had a supra it was hard to tell in the picture and all the female seller knew was it was her dads and it was a Ludwig. Also included were chrome wrap drums including a 10 lug virgion bass, two concert toms on a stand and a floor tom. All Atlas stands and five big cymbals plus the mystery snare that some on the formn thought could be a supra. All for 150.00. Even though I was the first to call, she sold it before I could get there. Talk about bummed out, It took a while to get over it. It still bugs me.
I am happy for you and your great score. Have fun playing those drums!
Thank you,
Jeff C

It's been some years since I even played one of these. Man, what a mighty snare drum it is. From buzz rolls to all out, it just sings! Amazing tone.
This one be a 'keeper' for sure.

John,
It's basically a Black Beauty with a chrome instead of black nickle plating...
Black Beauty's have that nice crisp attack that only brass can give.
A lot different from the warmer Ludaloy material of 99% of all Supra's.
Modern Black Beautys use the exact same shell design as the 400 and the formula has never changed.
Good thing!
I found a pre-serial Supra a couple of years ago but never bought it because it had extra holes where someone had changed out the strainer. I almost passed out with grief when I saw the extra holes... The seller wanted $400 but with extra holes??? I passed.
Nice drum you got there and what a find man!!!

Man, I 'almost' sold it! I've been anxious about meeting some tax obligations so I put a bunch of stuff up for sale that I hoped would bring in some $. The COB was among them but I took it down, along with a woody kit I built, because I couldn't stand the thought of losing them. It's sitting behind my kit safe and sound. It won't be going anywhere any time soon.
