Beautiful! 12x20? Really? I didn't think they were even making 14x20 Club Dates during the transition period. Another missing link? :)

Stunning! Very cool kit. Oh, I would love to sit behind those ...

I bought the kit from the original owner as a 'basket case' - just one stop away from the trash heap. The shells and hardware were sound so I stripped them down to bare wood and did a top to bottom restoration on them.

These are the original sizes of the kit. They are not orphans. (Except for the Jazzfest which I added to complete the kit.) And although I haven't seen a whole lot of them, I have seen other 12"x20" bass drums from Ludwig. It was originally set-up as single-tension, but I converted it to dual tension to make accurate tuning easier. It's an awesome sounding little kit too. 3-ply mahogany interior/poplar/ maple exterior w/rock maple re-rings. FAT CITY! Tone to die for.

Hey Mike! You're here too? Now, I feel more at home. The Band

I needed a drum fix bad, so I broke down and signed up here. So far, it's been like 'old home week,' I'm loving it. I'm telling you, I couldn't have been cut off from my social network at a worse time in my life. It's great to find you all here. Does my heart good.

I never got to post pix of the completed Camco's at the other place. Are there any Camco lovers here? If there are, I'll take a bunch of shots and show them off. I'm having tons of fun playing them. They sound so good that they've brought all the fun back to playing for me. It's like I'm as excited about playing these days like I was when I was a kid and first picked up a set of sticks. The drums are so great, they make me sound much better than I am. As weird as the 13", 15", 16", 20" set-up is size-wise, I got a great spread between them and the drums sound killer. The hybrid 60's Camco snare shell combined with the DW lugs and hardware made an awesome sounding snare drum to complete the kit. I'll take some shots over the week-end.

Hey Kevin, if the clubbies 'motivated' you, the Camco's will definitely get you out of your chair and into the workshop.

Looking forward to pics of the Camco's....
I've got these on my mind right now.
A Slingy re-wrap, just waiting for bass hoops to dry, and they will be for sale.
A JHB sized Slingy project... thrashing around whether to go Mahogany or wrap with Green Glass.
The Clubbies....

Mmmm, green glass, love it. Kevin, those clubbies are just a strip & spray away from looking factory mint. Duco is du-able and easy, all you need is an old turntable, a steady hand and the will to do it. Those are some really worthy project kits. I would have been all over those like ugly on an ape. I admire your ability to resist/procrastinate. It would make me crazy if I had that many cool projects just sitting around waiting.

Question my friend...
You mentioned you stripped them right down to the Maple, Maybe it's my older eyes but is the the mid-section of your drums maple wood or gold paint?

Here's a pic of my Ducos set ready for stripping down. Any advice?

Kevins, looks like we have the same kit for resto. My bass is a 22" and the snare a jazz fest.

Cheers!

Kellyj - It's a dark gold metallic spray enamel. Krylon. I used a turntable to paint the shells. As you can see, it came out as good as any factory paint job.

The jazzfest was added to the kit by me. When I bought the drums, I got the 13. 15, 20. I got a deal on a transition badge (1959 - like the other drums) jazzfest so I jumped on it. I stripped it, did a matching duco paint job and I added it to the clubbies to complete the kit.

Sears sells a heavy-duty spray gel stripper. It sprays on goopy so that it literally traps the paint and residue in a thick and rapidly expanding gel. I wear protective gear when I use it; heavy rubber gloves, face mask, goggles. After about ten to fifteen minutes, the gel and all the goop gets scraped off with a plastic putty knife. Leaves clean, bare wood every time. All the waste is carefully wrapped in layers of plastic for disposal. As long as you're careful and take some basic precautions, it's a pretty safe operation. What you don't want to do is dry-sand the finish off and creating a dust cloud of that poison.

As for your drums: That is one great candidate for restoration. Use the gel stripper I recommended to get the shells down to bare wood. Sand the exteriors smooth. I used a turntable set at 33 1/3 rpm with a thin platform centered on top (to hold the drum shells) and then it was just a matter of using the lug holes to get my spacing for the stripe. The stripe on a duco paint job is almost always the same width as the lug holes. Paint the lighter color first, (center stripe) and while it still tacky, (to get a good blend line happening,) spray on the top and bottom color. Again, using the lug holes as stopping points. With a steady hand, your paint job will look every bit as good as anything that came out of the factory. The trick to getting a great duco finish is in the spinning turn-table.

Kev - time to get to work buddy! Those are some great kits that are collecting dust... <grin, nudge, nudge>

Kevin - If you do the grunt work... remove all hardware, badges etc. Strip the shells and sand them, I will do the paint job for you. Just send me the bare shells, I'll give you a list of the paint needed so you can send the paint along too with the shells. You pay the shipping back and forth to PA and I'll do the paint job free. You'll get back a like-new set of duco painted clubbie shells.

You don't have to go with the original colors either. Think about it... red/cream/red, turquoise/silver/turquoise, green/gold/green....

So many to choose from.... Soap Box

Thanks for the kind words, the kit just looks, sounds and plays great. Can't beat vintage 3-ply mahogany/poplar/maple shells with a stick! <grin>

Powertone... I haven't posted any of the 'before pictures'... after you see what these tubs looked like when I first got them, you'll really be impressed! lol

They were one short step away from the trash heap. One foot in the hole, the other on a banana peel! See photos. These drums had three coats of paint, inside and out plus they were all covered in contact paper. It was quite a job getting them from there to where they are now.
