Great looking Spitfire! I had the COB version back in the late 70's, that I used with my 1972 Rogers Celebrity kit. I know I have a small picture somewhere and will post it when found. Tuning of those 12 lugs drove me crazy! I just couldn't get them to hold a pitch. Don't recall if I sold it or traded it in on something else. What I did learn years later, is that tuning of a 12-lug drum requires small increments to hold proper tension. The lug spacing is just too close to even use 1/2 turn increments without other tension rods loosening up. You know the old saying; "if I only knew then what I know now"!! Sure wish I would have held onto my COB Spitfire! DOH

I also have a Slingerland, COB-Spitfire 5" x 14", 12-lug. It sounds great too.
Thanks for sharing your experiences. Here is a pic of the 1979 Louie Bellson set:

Great, you had the same "Spitfire" brass as pictured in the 1979 Slingerland catalog above.
By the way, my COB 5" x 14" COB-Spitfire has a small dent. I bought it one year ago. The seller told me that he had dropped the drum on the floor on the snare's butt side bridge. This made the distance between the snare's butt bridge and strainer-bridge a little bit narrower, resulting in that one cannot use an extended snare wire, but has to use a normal sized one instead.
I found an alternative solution. I use a Puresound-custom Pro snare wire with high tension straps. That way I can combine Gatzen's smart idea with the TDR-strainer, which I like very much.
One day I will maybe let a specialist in brass drums do a subtle hammer work and get rid of this small dent. I will then be able to buy myself an extended Radio King snare wire to put there instead.
