View Full Version : Ludwig & Ludwig 1940 Standard NOB

Here is a nice Ludwig & Ludwig, NOB "Standard" snare. 6.5 X14, eight Imperial lugs, self-aligning t-rods, die-cast hoops (looking for the top hoop), Leedy, George Way design, standard strainer.

The drum was made a few months prior to the US entering WWII after which drum making went mostly wood!

The snare has been in my collection for about three years. If anyone knows where I can find the top hoop, let me know.

Very nice. Interesting how my old B/O 1980 snare resembled your 40's snare; I know little about Ludwig's line and history.

What's the do-hickey on the bottom rim, at the snare bed?

Bill, they are snare guards they are part of the rims, all standards have them.

Oh. Thanks, VM. I have a bottom snare-rim with a notch at either snare end and holes at both sides of the notch. I suppose this is for something similar, but I don't have the missing pieces. This rim came on a 70's Gretsch snare I bought, butI'm sure it wasn't original.

The rims of the period were also nickle plated brass, really heavy.
The Imperial lug which you have on your Supra was introduced in 1936 and halted in 1941 because of WWII, then re-introduced on the Supraphonic in 1959 and are continued to this day. The Imperial lug is the most successful lug ever made...

oh baby...I love that drum.....someday I will stumble upon one at an estate sale or someplace...some day......beautiful.....

Bill, they are snare guards they are part of the rims, all standards have them.

In my youth, I thought they were handles. No joke. I carried my snares (that had them) by the guard, from case to stage. Before you shoot jello balls at me, please consider that I was a very young lad playing and recording. I honestly didn't know any better. Youth is wasted on the young.

Nickel-plated brass? Nice! Nicer than the thin hoops my '80 had. It was still a really good sounding snare. I imagine yours sounds great.
