I picked this one up last week. The prior owner had all the pieces in a box when I purchased it without any heads. Eight of the twenty rim clips were broken, the shell and rims were extremely dull and the t-rods, strainer and snare butt had so much rust on them they were barely recognizable. You can see pics of their original condition in the "Vintage Drum" section of the forum under the subject title: "NEED HELP TO I.D. THIS OLD LUDDY."

From the research I've done, this particular model was labelled "The original Ludwig all metal drum" and was offered between 1928 and 1936. It features 10 tube lugs, rim clips and the "Professional Strainer" (1928-1939), which was a revision of the Ludwig 338 strainer. Although the upgraded strainer included an extension lever, it wasn't included with my particular drum. You can see the hole in the upper portion of the triangular frame of the strainer where the extension lever would mount. Engraved on the shell of the drum is "Ludwig Trademark". It can be seen on othe panel just to the left of the strainer.

The finished product shown in the pic is the result of a lot of "elbow grease" using Cape Cod Cloths and "Evapo-Rust." I replaced the broken rim clips with some originals I had in my parts bin. At the present time, some are nickel and some are chrome. Hopefully, in the near future, I'll have all matching clips. I installed a Ludwig 100th Anniversary batter side head on the shell.

I'm very satisfied how this one turned out. It's one of the oldest drums in my current collection.

THANKS for looking!

Wow your hard work on that drum has really paid off! It's looking great! Hope you have good luck in finding the remaining parts you need. Congrats!

Looks awesome........

I THINK the Jim Petty RK 3 point arm might work on your strainer, but don't quote me on that. You might have to file off the 2 little pieces on the sides.......

I know he has a RK strainer arm nut that will work,as I have the same "Timepiece" Ludwig strainer as you,and I tried the Ludwig nut to hold my 3 point RK arm on,and it fit the same hole.

PS....maybe you should show the guy the drum now that you have restored it.........

I just put a LOT of hours into restoring a 1948 BDP RK set top to bottom, and I am going to have the guy I bought it from come over to see it now that I brought it back from the dead...........

It was his dads kit,and I think he will be happy I made it look almost new...........his dad is still alive,so he should be happy to hear it ended up in good hands.......

VERY NICE! I love seeing these old drums brought back to life. (Looks like Evapo-Rust worked good.)

Olimpass / kevins / vintagemore2000 / GG Vintage: Thanks for the kind words. They're greatly appreciated!Bowing

blairndrums: THANKS AGAIN for the tip in regard to the "Evapo-Rust". I couldn't have worked this project without your help! I'd love to show the prior owner how this one came out but, unfortuntely, he's now in Florida and I don't have a point of contact. His deceased father was the original owner of the drum. Your story about your RK sounds pretty similar to mine actually. Thanks also for the info on the "arm."

olddrums: No need for you to "shut up" at all. You are correct regarding that particular clip. There are still several that I'll be replacing as soon as I come up with some additional era-correct ones. THANKS for your input!

In my humble opinion, Ludwig brass snare drums from before WWII are the best ever made. Enjoy your new/old drum. I hope you plan to play it.
