I see these alot on CL, entry level starter kits with added toms and tons of entry level cymbals at prices higher than good quality used pro kits. Sound percussion, GP, even some first acts at prices higher than new because they added a few PST or Planet z cymbals and an orphaned tom here or there.

I worked for Sam Ash for 5 years as drum department manager right about the time groove percussion came about. it was right after 9/11, in a panic, ash decided to stop focusing on selling pro quality stuff and went the cheap taiwan import route for higher profit margin. ruined their credit and business in my opinion.
ANYWHO...
groove percussion is exclusive to sam ash, as in they wholesaled the cheapest hunks of sh** they could find and branded them Groove Percussion.
Selling these kits complete w/ hardware n cymbals for $269 and making almost $40 commission per set will give u a good idea of the 'quality'.
As these sets were mainly selling to child beginner drummers, the parents would always ask "how do we set this thing up?" I would then offer a set up fee for $50, ill come to your house, set it up, tune it and your ready to go.
I must have set up 1,000 (seriously) drum kits in my life, high end, mid, low end... and this was by the far the biggest pain in the taint i've ever had.
all pieces came in one enormous box which was made of cheap flimsy cardboard. it wasnt even a question if things were broken, 7 out of 10 boxes always had a problem. then u open it, no heads on any drums, all t rods/hoops/spurs were shrink wrapped together (PAIN), the heads were just laughable, the cymbals were completely ridiculous. tap the hihat and it dents.
they would take atleast 45 minutes to an hour to set up. sounds ok but i did this for a living, it took 3 times as long as any other kit.
classic, lovely setup problems such as t-rods stripping out the lug nut then locking up. NO snare bed. you cant tune these drums, close to impossible to get them to sound 'good'.
when parts would break, usually within the first month, ud get calls for replacement pieces that didnt exist, no warranty either. "hey my wingnut snapped off on my throne" or "hey my snare stand SNAPPED IN HALF!" or "my hihat stand pull rod..." you get the idea. fun stuff!

this whole kit is an abomination of failures and profit margin, a catch 22 for it's salesmen! hope you enjoyed this bitter piece of history

if you need money, don't do it. the commission rates r terrible. used to be amazing in the late 90's til about 2002.
used to be weekly commission vs. draw. your draw is your hourly pay, minimum wadge. so say as a salesmen, u do 40 hours @ 7$, its 280 a week. you have to sell enough IN PROFIT to beat it. so u make 40 on a GP kit, sell 7 a week u r even, they anything after that u sell is commission.
weekly commission was the bomb, cuz u could sell a v kit and make 300 in commission on monday, then the whole week was extra dough.
NOW, since Gutter Center came about, ash copied their commission system which is monthly commissions. so, u could have 3 slammin weeks, then crap the bed on the 4th week and lose it all cuz it evens out. the commission is awful too, like 2%. make 6 bucks on 20" k custom ride.
its not worth it anymore unless u really love doing it. the internet murdered it too. imagine spending a week showing someone a TD20 roland v kit and the ins and outs of it, just to have them bail and get it online for afew bucks less.
heart wrenching i tell ya!
in short, dont do it unless u are cool with minimum wadge

I have been a car salesman for years. In the 90s, it was not uncommon to work 2-3 weeks a month and make 10K...today, internet and poor economy, you work 70-80/wk, 6 days, and make 2500....nah, I'm out. Roofing is the deal in OK.

You did notice the professional rolled rubber foam, stuffed into the tom, to make it sound like a limp fiber drum case? Lame 8" cowbell? That's huge!

BTW....how is it a colossal waste of money if we know that no one is going to spend a dime on this kit? I see no money wasted, just tons saved....:p

Hmm. I don't know Jonni. By those numbers that is a buck twenty a year. 100k plus a year is still respectable in 2010, isn't it?
