I just picked up this single ply maple (I'm told) Radio King on eBay. My first Slingerland product. I hope it was a good choice. Any comments on the quality? Is the drum at all rare?

It's not all that rare, but the Slingerland black diamond is one of the nicest versions of that finish, and the solid shell slingerlands have a great sound...you can crank them or tuned them down. Careful with that throw-off arm, as they tend to break. It's a very nice drum.

hi Gary,
very nice drum! i got the same finish in 6 1/2, Chicago badge (from the 50's) as 16 lugger. these single ply shells have a particular wood sound, fat backbeat in the middle and killer rimshots. very sensitive response.
i just luuuuuv that BDP!!!
...keep on banging them skins...

I modelled my shells [True North] after the RK.I admire that drum so much i wanted to make them even better. In my opinion i did just that because the one flaw the rk had was a lack of attention to detail, especially edges and beds, but no one seemed to care much about that back then.Anyway,i could talk for hours about this but i wontParty ....Suffice it to say you have imo one of the best snare drums ever builtSoap Box

Now I'm excited. Thanks for the input gang. Much appreciated. I love a good wood drum. I'll check the edges but the ear is the best judge.

Regards,

Gary
