Pick up a 1965 Slingerland kit in Champagne sparkle! From the pics you can obviously tell I am missing a few things, so I am on the hunt. The wrap is in mint condition with only one little deep scratch in the bottom of the bass drum.
What model kit is this? Is it the Gene Krupa Deluxe? I think the snare is only one ply and appears to be maple? I love the fact that the snare is wrapped the same as the rest. Just like my first kit 30 years ago. Inside the bass there is a P stamped. What does that stand for?
The guy original listed it on CL for $30, but from the volume of emails he woke to the fact that it was worth more. Luckily I didn't have to pay too much more than that to get it. It was his uncle's old set and just needed to sell it before moving. He missed placed the claws and T's in packing for moving. He said he'll get them to me when he finds them.

Nice.....
Any way for a really close clear pic of the bearing edge on the snare?
It would just be very rare for a '65 to be a solid shell, and I would love to see it.
The good Doctor states that very few solid maple shell snares were actually produced from '65 to '70 even though they were a cataloged item.

Here are a few close ups of the snare bearing edge. I had to put my hand in the pic to get it to focus right.
So what do you think?

Excellent! I know it won't be hard to find the tension rods for the snare, but I'm worried about finding a 13x9 tom with the clip type mount and finding the rest of the tom mount! I don't mind recovering the tom, but I do need it to be the right mount and from around '65. Like I said the seller says he has the t's and claws somewhere. I just hope he can find them. If not, add those to the list too.

Great find! Single ply artist snare, thats awesome! Finding a matching rack tom won't be as hard as you think, just keep your eyes on the bay. The "P" stands for pearl meaning it is a wrapped drum. Man why can't I find these deals :(.

Thanks for the info. I hope it won't be hard to find. I know how you feel about finding deals - I've been looking for a long time and just started to give up. Yet it seems like others get them all the time. But truly, all I really needed was one good find to keep. Not interested in buying and selling.

Shawn,
Nice kit! I am pretty sure that there are a couple of Slingerland Champagne Sparkle toms currently listed on ebay. I would check over there if you can.
Good luck!

When one gets a sweet deal on a sweet kit like this, it feels like you are supposed to have this kit. Destiny.

That's about how I felt - like it had to be mine because that is what was supposed to happen. I really couldn't believe I bought it - I was so excited. My wife can't believe it either....but she wasn't filled with excitement, it was more like disbelief that I bought more stuff. That's when I had to give a long explanation of how cool it is. I could tell that she stopped listening about five words in.

Big S. maybe I'm outta' line here, but I wouldn't worry too much about the wife's disapproval. I've got a '63 SBP Modern Jazz set that's outlasted two wives. Spouses come & go, Slingerlands are forever!
BTW, I'm also looking for CH SP orphans to match a '62 16" bass drum, interested in 10/12/13 & snare 5-6x13 preferred.
BTW #2, P, as deadhead stated, indeed stands for pearl. This was factory shorthand for 'the outside don't hafta' be perfect 'cause its gettin' some kinda' wrap' whether that be pearl, sparkle or satin flame. An M on the inside stands for any kind of laquer finish including clear. My best sources say the M stood for mahogany, but I've also been told it stood for maple. I've seen it on both maple & mahogany. So if you have a wrapped M drum it's not original, conversely a laquered P drum is also not original. There may be a few exceptions to this due to factory mix-ups or a rush order, but very few.
Nice score on them, I'm happy for ya'.
Too many snares is still not enough!....Eddie.

While explaining "how cool it is" to your wife you might have neglected to clarify the fact that you didn't simply "buy more stuff". You actually made an extremely wise "investment" that will pay off in the long run with a great ROI ("return on investment"), should you decide to sell.
Most of us in such an excited state might not have acted in such a cool, calm, rational manner. Actually, I think she should consider taking you out to dinner with all the money you saved due to your keen business sense!Cool Dude
Oops, gotta run. The wife's yelling at me to take out the garbage!
GREAT FIND! Enjoy!
