I have a shot at buying this Duco kit and this xylophone at an upcoming tag sale about 40 miles from me. I don't know the asking price, but I'll find out.

But -- Who made the the xylo? I think the drums are Slingies, but not sure. How much should I pay? If I did make the purchase, I would probably sell them.

Here's a link to the estate sle page where you can find pics:

That set looks to be complete, down to the brushes.......
It would be a real shame and close to criminal to separate any element of that set from itsself.
It's a piece of history.

That's not a xylo, it's a vibraphone. It's a Musser, looks like a Century model. Nice instrument -- sells for about $4500-$5000 new.

Agreed. Please DO NOT part out anything in this kit! These complete kits are like hen's teeth these days!

And now, we pause for an Educational Moment.....

"hens teeth"

Chicks have an egg tooth. It drops off after a bit. They aren't called hens until after one year (long after the tooth drops off), so a hen would not have this tooth. I seem to recall a study back in the early 80's where mouse mesenchyme was added to the embryonic chick epithelium and a tooth grew. That was cool. The chicken grew up with a molar - a hens tooth, so to speak.
But, the phrase infers that it doesn't naturally occur, so it still stands. Hens teeth are indeed rare and do not occur in nature. Pretty neato stuff, though.

The vibraphone looks like a Lionel Hampton model, with the gold bars and the telling pedal bracket. They sold for $6000+ if I remember right...

vintagemore -- It looks like a five-piece kit. I think that's a matching snare drum behind the hats.

skydog & caddywump -- Thanks for the Musser info. That's an awesome I.D.!!!

fishwaltz -- I'm going to try to buy the vibes and the kit. I'll see how they're priced. I hope that snare is a single-ply Radio King. But whatever it is, I'm interested. The odds are that someone else will get there before me, but I'll take my shot and post the results.

If I do end up with the kit, I'll keep it together whatever I do with it.

That's great! Whenever I see things like that, I imagine an archeologist opening up a mummy's tomb and seeing that treasure again for the first time in thousands of years -lying there just like it was when it was first put there.

I hope you get it, enjoy it and keep it all together for the next archeologist to dig up some day. :Santa:

The open-ended frame is the same one as on the Hampton version of the Century vibes, but the pedal bracket and gold bars are typical of the regular Century model, too. Did they ever make the Lionel Hampton model with a black frame?

...and just sort of wondering out loud: What makes the Hampton model worth an extra grand? Other than the natural wood finish, open-ended frame, and Lionel Hampton's name on the front rail, is it any different than the standard Century vibes?
