Trixon Speedfire

Hi All,

I'm looking for a Trixon Speedfire kit or bass drum.
Has anyone out there ever played (or own) one of these?
One of my favorite "modern" drummers, Ricky Lee Brawn (Big Six, Stargazers, Space Cadets) uses one and really gets a great vintage sound:

It also looks like my favorite band in the world, Bill Haley and the Comets, used one with drummer David Holly at one point as well...

Love the look, but I've heard mixed things on how these actually sound, and that the double bass drum/pedal feature on the bass drum isn't as cool as it seems. Any opinions?

I'd like to get one of those kits, too! What a wild look. However, I think the look was stronger than the sound. A replacement head for those has to be custom-made and they are QUITE expensive! I have also heard tell that much of the Trixon hardware was not very stable or durable...but wow, they sure do look cool. I favor the conical Trixons, myself.

I'm with O-lugs on this one.Definatly an awsome collectors piece ( provided you find a complete kit...or at least individual shells with all the hardware ) but sound wise that particular kit I havn't heard many good reviews on.And the fact that the price alone for a new bass drum head...steep to say the least.But its prefrence.If you are willing to pay for new custom bass drum heads...and play the bass drum single ( I believe I heard that playing double on it is what really does it in ) then feel free to endulge.You may love the sound of the kit where as others have disliked it.

Probably a bit of stretch for you, but there is a red sparkle Trixon Speedfire (at least that's what it looks like through glass) in the window of Hellstone Music in Stockholm, Sweden, one of the country's premiere (and also one of the few) vintage shops.

P.S. Have just stumbled over a great 60's Sonor kit and at least three types of kits I've never heard of/seen before, almost all of which are probably European. Will post picture soonest 'cause I need help identifying these (and to see if they're worth buying). All found in a tiny music shop in the Swedish equivalent of the original one horse town.

Thanks, David. I would love to see what they have, as I really dig those mid-50's, early 60's Sonor kits, too.

Checked around online for a website for Hellstone, but didn't find anything. You wouldn't happen to know where I could scrounge up some contact info, would you?

I have played one. It was five years ago at Sound City Studios (Nirvana - Nevermind, Fleetwood Mac - Rumors) in Van Nuys, CA. It belonged to Sylvia Massy (Tool, System of a down etc...) an amazing engineer and mixer. She engineered my band Loudermilk's second album "the Red Record." She brought it in for an extra flavor in the creative process and she could make any drum sound great in the studio.

I remember not being blown away by the sound but really liking the whole vibe of the drumset. Her Trixon had like five toms across the front and an 18" floor tom. I would buy one in a second if I had the chance.

You can look at this spoof video we did in some downtime at Sound City. Pay no attention to the stupid humor just look to my left side and you can see the toms. And the Green tom in the back is the floor tom. I know it is not much but when I am looking into buying something I like to find as many little things on the web that I can.
