View Full Version : Wing style tighteners on mounted tom?

I came across an old Slingerland drum kit. 20" bass drum, 13" mounted tom. The 13" is a concert tom style, and the tension rods have wings on them like the bass drum claw types would use.

Anyone seen this? It seems like I have, but I went through the catalogs on here, and can't find an example of this. The little old lady said her husband bought the kit around WWII. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Very cool drum. What year (approx.) is your drum? If you don't mind me asking.

It's very early 30's it has two single green pad Dodd muffler in it, it is virgin no tom mounts what so ever on this drum they are depicted in the rob cook slingerland book on page # 169, If I ever sell this tom someone will be parting with some serious cash!

Slingerland also used the t-rods like that on the marching drums of the 1930-40s with wood rims...The r-rods were from 3 1/2" long to 5 1/2" long--like you would fine on the bass drums..Mikey

Kinda hard to tell from the small pictures, but... In the third shot, the bottom 2" or so of the mounted tom shell seems a bit darker. Is it possible it had a tacked-on resonant head?

I'm going to go look at the drums tonight, I wondered about the 'tack on' bottom head myself. I have a feeling that that's what is supposed to be there.
The bass drum has a mount drilled on it, does anyone know the odds as to whether this is stock, or added later??

The mount that's supporting the tom in the pictures was added a few decades after the drum was built. I can't tell for certain what type it is from the pics, but the base of the mount looks a lot like one I have on a 1970s Ludwig drum.

Looking through some catalog scans, there are some drums in the 1941 catalog that show tacked-on tom resonant heads. No t-handled toms, though, so maybe we're looking at 1930's drums? (Or a custom order, or someone swapped the rods, or...)

I had a feeling about the mount, stinks that someone did that, but I'm sure there was a reason.

I know it's hard with these pictures, but would anyone like to give an opinion on value of the drums? Either as just bass and tom, or as a 3 piece? I told them I would try to find a value for them on the drums, but this exceeds my knowledge, and I hate guessing!

Thanks.
