Here, this nice STAR 4-piece just surfaced on Yahoo Auctions Japan. In the description it says that some of the hardware has been changed out (maybe broke and replaced with other vintage parts-looks like). 2 day auction ends Weds/Thurs this week. Currently 70$ with 7 bids.
Enjoy the photos:

Very nice kit!..My badge is the same except it also says..Made in Japan...Is there a time frame difference? Also, what do you think it will end at considering the market being what it is?

A few expensive blooded buyers have been in lately- odd, considering the economy but I expect this one to go about 500$ - I think it`s actual worth is about 350$ myself. There really are less STAR drums out on auction about 10x more vintage Pearl stuff than STAR. I think that rarity factor will bring this one up in price a bit. I have the green light from my wife on this auction so I might jump in.

EXCELLENT...Go for it,and good luck....Do you know why my badge is the same as perhaps your new one,but mine also says Made in Japan...The badges are identical except for that.

And it is covered in pleather to boot! I wonder when that was an option? Looks like it is 20-12-14 and 5.5 snare. I am about to start a restoraion on another Star 20-12-14 that has been "refinished"-had the wrap stripped and then stained. I think I am going to talk the guy into letting me wrap it in plastic wrap, maybe a nice green srark, or maybe I'll do the poly/glitter in a color of his choice.
Anyway, those are nice! But the ripple in the snare...I don't know, maybe this is a re-wrap. Someone saw a Black Panther and decided they could just cover these instead....?
Must say that I, too, have strong doubts about the black wrap being original.
All I know from catalogues of that aera is that black was mainly not listed in,
besides an early 70s, being listed as 'Jet black'.
So it might be rare (black in generally was not common at that time) - but even
today I find that colour fanciless.
I wouldn't bid on that - especially not for that amount you think it will be settled with.

Nice drum but, I too don't think the wrap is not original. It seems like the plastic leather (pleather) that you can buy at wal-mart. I already re-wrapped a few drumkits with that material. It looks nice, sort of the Ludwig Black Panther wrap, but probably not original to the drum..........I may be wrong.
These are some re-wrap jobs I've done with the pleather

Osaka, these were all orphan pieces in my garage that were reunited as a family with one common denominator.........Pleather !!!! Made some kid happy, that's all I know.

If we all give the gift of music, just once, it makes this all worth it. The very first kit I completely rescued from the fireplace was last summer, and I promptly donated it to the kid around the corner. As a reward, the Drum Gods (or as I prefer, The Good Lord) saw fit to make sure the gorgeous set of WMP in the gallery came my way.

Drumsteroo, the bass drum in the third photo has those classic early 70s Pearl bass drum - very long retractable legs. The DownBeat line and ThunderKings had those. Valencias and the cheaper models still had the small, short retractable legs.

What adhesive did you use? I might try that...

I didn't use adhesive, I just used double sided tape, carpet tape. If I would redo them today I'd probably use 3M contact adhesive. You got test it out first to make sure the adhesive actually bonds with the pleather.

I just won the auction for this very interesting STAR 4-piece with Kingstone cymbals and hardware. Sizes are 20x16/14x14/12x8/14x5
This kit intrigued me from the moment I saw it- it is re-wrapped in a blue sparkle but they were able to re-affix the badges properly. Instead of remount ing the original lugs he used Tama ARTSTAR lugs and hardware through the bass and toms- the snare is original cond- not a re-wrap. He says he also painted the inside of the shells to protect them from humidity. All in all- it looks very well done- a nice players STAR kit- with enough reliable hardware that I can perform with it if I want. ( I have had mounting bolts (inserts) snap in the middle of a show before causing a head to de-tension. Now I at least put in new tension bolts on anything I choose to play live) Check the pics - I will post more when it arrives and I can study it more. Got it for about 380$ -everything in the photos was included.

Wow, Eric! Thise had to be the very end of the run for Star. The shells are not typical of Star drums at all. Those look like regular modern edges from the early 70s. My guess is this is a ramp up kit going into TAMA production. Rare indeed! I have yet to see this type of shell. Very nice find! Looks more like a poly or lacquer than paint.

Nice drums. I do think they look nice and the starting bid is quite acceptable. How much do you think it would go up? I would like to bid for 100 and that's my final bid.

I bought them and found the wrap lacking in quality (it was a re-wrap) I then rewrapped them myself with green satin flame. Here is the finished product (as many have already seen these- I apologize - it seemed some haven't seen them) 100& wouldn`t be enough- I happily paid about 350$ for these and then about 250$ for the wrap and spent about 10hours of labor to clean them up- this was not a 100$ drumset at all. I would sell you the front bass drum head for 100$ if you like.

Many thanks, lots of people don't realize that re-wrapping most drums is almost as easy as wrapping a nice present. Just takes a little longer!

In Japan those beauties are worth 50,000yen- about 560$ all cleaned up shiny and neat. If you sell them dirty then in Japan maybe you get 35,000yen (400$)
In the USA then I think about 350-400$max is what you`ll get. They are just wonderful- do us a favor and keep the snare with the set! Do not sell them out as pieces. I have so many kits right now I can`t fit any more- otherwise I would be all over this- so sweet. what do you know about it`s history?

Amazing...and free. Damn! What did I do wrong? Anyway, O'bop is about right on. Here, because they are MIJ Star drums, and the fact this is a very rare, and highly sought after wrap, 400 should be about right, if they are complete and no fade. Let's see the interiors. This is a nice 20-12-14 w/matching snare. This is a one in a million find. I would be willing to trade you a completely restored, WMP 22-16-13 w/matching snare if you would like to consider a bigger set. That is if you are into rock sized over jazz sized drums. Did you get any stands and/or cymbals?
I do excellent work and my kits are without equal in the MIJ world.

I know absolutely nothing about its history. My dad is a teacher and was given it by a parent of one of his students as a kit for the school. They decided they didnt want it but he said i might be interested in it. I have no other vintage kits. I actually build kits and more interested in that sort of thing. The finish is in absolutely perfect order. The hardware/chrome needs to be cleaned up and age has got to it somewhat. There is a snare stand with the set and and old olympic pedal. It has all original star skins on it bar on the underside of the mounted tom where the skin has been changed. I reckon i am going to clean it up and then sell it on. Cant believe this find.

Whatever you do, protect those floor tom t-rods with your life! They may be the last ones on earth! (I know, I've been looking.)
Nice set, by the way. That wrap is not my favorite, but it warms my heart to to see an old set like this still together and complete after 40+ years.

cn679, are you looking for original ones, are after market ones that fit. If it's 14inch your looking for, I have both. FYI
