Ok here goes,
I have had a few good recent deals IMHO that is.
I got a 4 piece blue Vistalite kit in perfect condition off of craigslist for $200.
This girl was selling all her ex boyfriends stuff. he left her owing a bunch of bills. I also bought a DW 9000 Kick pedal for $100 from her. . She called me a few days later begging for the pedal back. I told her I'd trade her for the Tama iron Cobra double pedal she had for sale for $200. She came got the dw pedal and gave me the tama. A friend of mine got this load of drums off of Cl.
A Zicko double bass acrylic kit, some WFL stuff, a 64 luddy ft and some black panthers, all for $250. I was sick, I emailed the seller and he never emailed me back. I ended up buying the blk Panthers for $400. They cleaned up nicely. All I had to order to restore them was heads and tension roods and t rods and claws. He later gave me the floor tom. it was WMP spray painted black. I cleaned off the paint and it look fabulous. BTW he netted about $3,000 for all the drum stuff. The WFL was a 20" bass drum and a 20" floor tom. Oh and he had 2 supraphonic snares, a wfl wmp snare and lots of parts.
Still makin me sick!!!!!!!!!! I hate that guy!!! LoLoLoLo

I got over the weekend in a Ludwig standard in a unusual Blue strata finish. No brown Cool1 and a very open pattern not the usual tight rings of thin stripes. 13 16 22 14sn. This guy happened to be minutes away from meeting another guy who came down from Schenectady. [I went up to Newburgh NY from South Jersey]
From him I got a psycho red [ALL GREENS PRESENT] clubdate 20 14 and a 12 [classic lug] an add on 13 classic lugs [no green]. About 7 cymbals 2 camber, paiste sound formula 10" splash Wuhan 12" mini china, Tosco Sabian, Paiste Stanople [swiss] and an old 14" heavily hammered Istanbul K gongy crash. Tama Drum stool 3 60's Luddy stands 4 newer Sonor 3K Stands BD mounted "L" arm both pieces box o parts.
Then Swung down to a fellow collector in North Jersey and picked up much needed parts. . Before I went I was able to secure a 12" clubdate in sacramento Ca to finish out the clubdates.. . . WHEW . GREAT DAY !!!. . . . Joe

Gosh..I'm loving all this stuff guys! As, of right now I have a couple deals I'm waiting to pounce on in a month or two(65 Sliver sparkle Super Classic Project Set and a 1962 rogers 20, 12, 14 set)

For what I have actually jumped on in the last couple months. Includes.....

-A 1966 mint supraphonic, early 60's goldtone cowbell, and a model 1400 stand($200)

-A 1963 Red sparkle Hollywood with matching super classic snare, wfl bass drum pedal, Ludwig mid-60's L-arm($500)...still in the process of completing it and cleaning it up.

That's all I got right now. Hopefully I'll have another vintage set in my hands by the end of the month if I'm lucky.

Dang, there are some great deals here! I haven't been all that lucky lately, I picked up a 60s BDP Slingy Artist for $175 and I got some decent deals on a pair of Bosphorus Turk hats and a 16" paper thin crash, but nothing too crazy lately, I'm past due for a good score 8).

Here a few of my recent finds:
MIJ Dynasonic Copy in Red Sparkle: $18

I would to see this one Ad...the reason, what makes it a Dyna copy? I have a ton of MIJ wood snares, and none are what I would consider a Dyna copy, but I see something new almost daily. Does it have a paralell strainer....that sort of thing.

Right now, in my home I have 5 amazing MIJ snares complete and playable, with 5 more waiting for completion, 1 Acrolite, 2 40++ yearold MIJ kits in fantastic condition, an early to mid-60s Ludwig Spur-Loc 1123-1 hh with the period correst 14" Paiste Stanople hats, in good condition, an 18" Paiste Stanople Sizzle Ride, no rivets, a 13" Avedis bottom that is a great effects cymbal, another TAMA hh with a pair of no-name heavy hats that sound amazing and all the rest of the various goodies. I have, with new heads, hoops, snares, everything you would need to restore a kit to playable condition, all this and more. All told, I have less than $300 invested in it all.
Th best deal was the Majestics for $50, including a ton of cybals and other gear. My WMP kit, from Kevins was $100 delivered, plus another 85 for a ghost pedal and a snare shell and hoops. So I think I have done very well for two old vintage kits that have amazing quality sound, for old MIJ stuff.....

I just rememberd a few more. I scored a pearl export 22, 12, 16, with a acrolite snare, stands, tama pedal and new 14" new beat hats for $150. Sold the 22,12,16, on ebay for $350, kept everything else. The guy was switching to guitar and was moving.

Also got a Tama stagestar 10-12-14-18 kick with 13" metal snare stands and throne for $50 on CL At that time I was looking for a 18" bass drum kit and was negotiating with another guy on another stagestar kit he was asking 300 for. I looked on Cl one morn and there it was but didnt say the brand. I called and asked what the badge on the drums said and it was excatly what I had been looking for. This girll was selling them to get them out of her garage. They belonged to her brother.

A few years ago a drummer friend of mine died. he had a Luddy Silver sparkle double bass drum kit consisting of 2-20" kick drums, 8,10,12,13,14,15 rack toms, 16" floor tom and a 5x14 Supraphonic snare, with Anvil Fiber cases, along with 3 ghost pedals, spur lock hi hat stand, 15" zildjian hats, and other zindjian and paiste cymbals. and all the hardware. He left his drums to our keyboard player. They had played together for years. I tried to buy them from him back then, but he really didnt wanna sell em. Today he brought them to me and wanted them out of his garage, sooooo I bought em. the front BD hoops are missing, but the t rods and claws are there. the bottom heads and lugs are off the shells but they were in paper sacks, except 6 small classic lugs are missing. I was asking $1,000, and I ended up giving him $800.

Maybe it would be considered a "Holiday" copy. The lugs look like B+B knock offs, the hoops are TALL...even though they are Stick Saver copies, and the strainer is an obvious knock off of the Rogers Clock Face or maybe at a stretch the Slingerland Zoomatic.

I take back my "dyna copy" statement and will call it a "Red Sparkle MIJ Holiday Artist Model"!!

OK, I guess everthing I own is a "deal". I have two sets of drums, two h-h, a pile of 7 snares, a few cymbals and various drum stuff.
I have less than 400 in all of it, and realistically, if I had to place a value on them, based on the completed sales of other people's stuff, I would have to say I am in the black, way in the black.
To wit:
1) (1) 1976 Ludwig Acrolite......$000.00Yes Sir
2) (5) Various MIJ snares.........$ 65.00 +/-
3) (1) 1968ish Majestic by Star $ 50.00 w/hats, stands, cymbals etc.
4) (1) Age unknown WMP 4 pc $215.00 including all parts to restore
5) variuos parts and pieces.......$ 80.00 Ghost pedal, TAMA pedals, etc.
I guess that makes the Acro the best deal of all, free! So that makes for about 1500-1750 if I had to sell everything. I don't like the prospect of asking for that kind of money for my MIJ drums, but if that is what the market will bear...I guess I'm in. Now, if I can just keep buying them for next to nothing Car Driving2

I recently got a 1942 Slingerland "Rolling Bomber" kit. 24, 13, 16, 14 (snare) with all the original hardware and cymbals. The kit came with an extra gold and black Duco snare. I think the extra snare id from 1938.
If anyone knows anything about "Rolling Bomber" kits I'd appreciate any info. Thanks!!

The very best deal I ever got was this. This is not drums but it is related to drums. In 2005 or 6 this chinese company approached me and offered me these chinese interior leather kits that fit all the biggest selling cars at the time. They sent me 40 kits. I didnt sell many of them because I was worried about the warrentee aspect of them. I sold 2 of them and payed them for them. After a few yrs they wanted them back, so I said come get em. They asked what Id give for them I offered $1,000 and they accepted. The sat on my shelf for a few more yrs untill I decided to list them on ebay. I sold every one of them in nothin flat. I got $299-399 for each kit. I netted over $13,000 on selling them. I had a paypal debit card and all kinds of money in my paypal account. I probably spent 1/2 of it on drums! I bought virtually anything I wanted off of ebay. I hope this post is acceptable to the forum.

04-20-2010, 09:13 PM
Got a deal today that I wanted to tell everyone about. Haven't seen the drums yet because a buddy picked them up for me, but...

For $150 I am getting:

A cheap red cb percussion kit complete with all hardware and Sabian B8 cymbals/tama stands that I am going to flip to a local student via everyone's favorite "list".

A 16 inch Blue Sparkle floor tom with yet to be determined brand name. Looks to be a MIJ drum though...or it is missing the badge. The guy that checked em out is not super knowledgeable on drums.

A 20 inch bass drum that is all painted up and will be a surprise to see what is under the paint and grime.

Some sweet Paiste Color Sound hats. (just kidding about the "sweet")

And finally....the real reason I got this pile of garbage:

A 1950's Single Ply Maple Slingerland Radio King 5x14 BDP with the all gold Chicago badge. Complete strainer and butt. Original top stamped hoop, and rods. Missing bottom hoop, snares, and rods. Stoked to get on restoring this one. I will post pics when they are in my hands.

A few months back i got the solid, non transparent black vistalite 18" floor tom original heads, excellent condition, with a remo muffler-type thing inside that fitted between the bearing edge and batter head that dampened the floor tom and made it sound more like a kick.

and black vistalite 24" kick, missing spurs, everything else intact but had seen water.

both for $100 on cl at a salvage store

Cleaned it all up vinegar and elbow grease and sold for $300 a few months later

All a-series here:
22" 50's hollow stamp zildjian ride minor keyhole - $50
16" 70's hollow ink logo thin & light crash minor keyhole & a small drilled out crack- $35
14" very light 60's zildijian hi hat pair - $180 (not really a steal but not bad)
and finally a 60's matching splash for $40

Wow!!! Amazing deals. Here goes mine. A couple days ago I got two cymbals for free, from my school. One is an exeptional dark, smokey jazz ride marked ''Raja Turko''. It's hand hammered and measures around 21'' and three quarters. The other one is an unmarked 20'' ride, wich is identical to a your tipical 70's Zildjian A ride, look wise and sound wise. They're great! I'm still looking for info on them. Like 2 years ago I got the hi-hats that went with the school's old setup, for free. They are 14'' Medium Thin 70's A Zildjians. Beauties! I also got a speedking pedal, a 13'' B/O psychedelic red tom, and two broken temple blocks for free. Sadly, they threw the rest away. (that being two Ludwig kits, one psychedelic red, one black oyster pearl, and whatever went with them, hardware snares etc. CryBaby)

Last year I got two Ludwig 1400's from the 70's, and a MIJ cymbal stand for you guessed it, free.

A few weeks ago I got a 30's 25.5'' Ludwig Universal bass drum, for 250$, Olympic spurs for 20$, a Ludwig clip mount or 10$, and a beautiful MIT timbale stand base for free! (seriously, I used MIT and beautiful in the same sentence, but it's a perfect height, flat based timbale stand for free, it was perfect!)

I'm thinking maybe that Turko may be a Tyrko. Tyrko cymbals were made for Sonor. Super Tyrko are pretty cool cymbals. I have one and it sounds great. I never heard of Raja though.

I thought the same thing, but it's clearly stamped ''Raja Turko'', and I did research on those Tyrko cymbals and there's absolutely no resemblance. It sounds really great though, no matter what it is. There's nothing of any Raja Turko on the internet, so i'm out of ideas. When I can a get a camera I'll make a thread with pics. Thanks for the input thought, I apreciate it.

I'm super excited about this Gretsch I just picked up yesterday.
It's my first Gretsch kit and it sounds great. This is a keeper! And, I got it for $500.
Don't know much about Gretsch drums, so any info would be great. Thanks!

40's radio king snare... needs much work, but worth it. Need lugs and strainer.... 70 bucks.... totally worth it. Will be a great drum, not collectors, but at least it will make sound again!

It's been a couple years but 1967 silver sparkle Ludwigs, keystone badge,12,13 16, 22, Acrolite snare. For the low low price of $5.00. Yes $5.00. a theater group was using them for props. They were moving to a new smaller place and were selling all their props and costumes for $5.00 ea. They needed some work but I've restored them and my son is playing them now. I can't figure out how to post pictures on this site it keeps telling me the file's too big. I'll figure it out and post some pictures of our sets.

Good Morning Y'all. I found a 1969 Ludwig Standard 5 piece kit this morning. 22,12,13,16,14. This kit has been rewraped and the left the badges off (go figure) It also came with some very nice 14" zildjian A hats. The hats alone are worth the $75 I paid for the kit. As far as I can see all the shells are in excellent shape, except for the warped yellow wrap. Are these drums worth restoring? Oh, buy the way, it also came with a 20" slingy bass drum.

Yesterday I scored a Ludwig B/O 3 ply set on Mahogany cortex on Rock sizes: 9x13,10x14,16x18 and 14x24 plus a CB700 snare, some japanese hardware (lugs, brackets, rail mount holders, etc) plus a 9x13 Star blue sparkle tom. a Speed king pedal a whole Groove percussion 4 PC set (In good condition), 2 Camber and 2 Grove percussion cymbals and a Ludwig Banana tom holder...everything for $300.00 plus a 2 hours drive round trip...
The Ludwigs have been butchered with Pearl export holders on the bass drum and the two toms but I know how to plug the holes and make them look really nice...

Just got a set of '66 Ludwig Hollywoods in champagne sparkle with matching Jazz Fest snare for $400. I think the snare may be a year later but the wrap matches exactly. Everything is in great shape. A little pitting on the bass claws and missing the muffler on the floor tom but nothing that can't be fixed. I figured the snare was worth not too far from what I paid for the whole thing.

Hi,

Last week I bought a Carlton 14x12 BMP pipe band snare. All, every bit, of the snare mechanisms are gone. The drum itself is fine if in need of a good bath and some loving care. Since snare parts are hard to come by, it will probably be made into a temporary (no new holes) floor tom. ($40).

Set of 70's A's 14/18/20, some grunge and scratches. Really nice sounding ride and hats for rock, blues, country, the crash hasn't move me yet. $120 for the set. (I am trying to build up my house gig cymbal sets so I don't have to haul so many cymbals around.)

Got another deal today. 5 Piece tama Rockstar wrapped in python skin.
this kit has been on craigslist here for months. at 1st he was asking 600 wih hardware and cymbals etc..... next it was $300 for just the shell pack. yada yada yada..... I finally went and looked at them today and picked em up for $100. They look much better in person than in his cellphone pics. This is only part of this story. A very good friend of mine we all Call reverand Al has been helping out at my shop for a few weeks, He's a musician. lead guitar player and singer. His band is "Reverand Al and the Pythons" Well when i bought these I wasn't thinkin of al at all, but when I showed them to him today he flipped out! he has to have these drums for his band. He has been telling me about some old Rogers drums he has, a tom and a floor tom in blue sparkle. The have the rogers script badge on them. So I tell him he can have the Tamas for the $100 I paid and the 2 rogers toms. Anxious to see the toms now.

Got another deal yesterday. I stopped by a pawn shop and there were 2 acrolites. I asked the guy how much? he said 79 for the black one and he'd throw the other one in for free. The silver one's rims have a lot of rust on them but the finish on the shell is in pretty good shape. the black one is in perfect shape.
Hell the mufflers are worth nearly that much!

Just yesterday I found out a drum store I used to frequent is in the process of closing, so today I drove over an hour back to that side of town and went in there to look around as they are blowing out everything in the store. It already had been mostly picked over, but I managed to get some odds and ends for a serious deal. I ended up with:

New:
7 pairs of sticks
11 drum heads (including 3-24" bass heads)
3 Pearl Optimounts

Used:
1 Pearl 1990s long counterweight boom cymbal arm
16 vintage Ludwig bass hoop claws
....and a 3 sided 1990s Pearl dr110 drum rack (no clamps), plus a single side Icons

All of that out the door for $200.

Havent bought anything since earlier last year (2010) but then i got a beautiful Ludwig mid 70's Vistalite in Tequila Sunrise, 22 BD,14T, 18FT, no damage, great chrome, no cracks or starring, think i gave around 750GBP, then i secured a matching "Tivoli" snare drum, believe i gave around 250GBP, finally i obtained a full set of correct Hercules hardware off E-Bay, hi-hat, snare stand, two boom cymbal stands, speed king pedal..chromes not the best in the world but at about 150 GBP the lot i cant complain can i?? Ive now added a full set of mid 70's Paiste 2002 Black Label cymbals, 14" HH, 16" & 18" Crashs, 20" Ride and a 20" China, all in blindingly gd condition off e-bay, bought seperately at various bargain prices so im well happy....A great looking vintage kit, ive often looked on e-bay etc in the UK and Stateside and have yet to see much in this finish up for sale so guess ive a nice investment...Will try to get some pics on here at some stage...
