Not quoted by a drummer, but by a keyboard player.
Q. How many drummers does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A. None. We have machines to do that now.

My drum machine doesn't get drunk on the job. I have heard that one a lot.

Hey Happy ~ That would require a good bit of searching - probably more so in late 70s / early 80s retro music magazines when the controversy was fresh.
As I was around back then  I remember that a few famous folk took it as a challenge and learned how to program superior drum parts (compared to non-drummers) - and were much in demand for those abilities. Unfortunately, no names come to mind.
However, here's a 2008 forum link I found that discusses the topic a good bit :

Worth the read & it might lead you to search some things out.

( I actually like 'em as a teaching / training / practice tool myself Kiss)

"Proper micing drums for rock music is quite difficult, as primary function of drum was to prob troops into battle, not to conquer girls' hearts."
