which cymbals brands, names did Nick mason from the band pink floyd use on Live at Pompeii (1972) ?
Does anyone make replicas or reissue that are close?
What type of material are these older vintage cymbals they feel different and sound different why is that? they have alot of rings which u can see and not hammered marks like the new cymbals do
Most bands from the 60's and early 70's used these types of cymbals were they brass u think but they looked and felt different

Hi, I think Nick Mason used a mix of Paiste Giant Beat cymbals and Paiste 2002 series. Paiste has reissued the Giant Beat series! Just go to Paiste.com for more info, and they also have Nick Mason's cymbal set-up! Take care. Phil C. Fitchburg, Mass 01420

Nick Mason's cymbals were the original Giant Beats and Formula 602's for the Pompeii session. Hi-hats were 14" 602s an 18" heavy GB on is left (now long out of production) and an 18",20", and 24" regular weight GBs.

What he said. Also, as time went on he changed with the company and went to 2002's. The earlier setup was more musical, though. Good question.

Sorry....missed the question about replicas......Paiste re-introduced the Giant Beats after being discontinued for many years back in 2005. They're not exactly like the originals, but they are close. Nick later went on to 2002s and then later Signatures....so it all depends on what era of Nick's cymbals you are trying to replicate or capture.
I've got to tell you though, that you can get pretty close with mixing the current Zildian A customs and certain K custom models too.......they shimmer just as much and are not quite as harsh sounding as some of the Paiste's are....but....if you must replicate Nick's setup to the T he used Paiste......just remember, you'll only come close....why? You're not Nick Mason, or Bonham, or whatever famous drummer's sound you are trying to achieve (and neither am I!! LOL!!)....you are you first and fourmost and that will always shine through first. What I'm saying is.....look for YOUR sound....be yourself and not always try to be like: insert name here.

Hi, After viewing the Pompeil video I had more of an appreciation for Floyd. Was his main ride an 18"? If so has he always played small rides?

I believe he used ALL of his cymbals as both crashes and rides....but in the video it appears that it was the 18" on his right that was most favored.

That video rules! Definitely my favorite music concert/performance, whatever concept video!
